lupe fiasco…on drake’s accolades

In the realm of hip-hop, Lupe Fiasco suggested Mos Def had the best album of the year (he’s up for two Grammys, including Best Rap Album) and that Drake should be up for Best New Artist (he only received a nod for Best Rap Solo Performance).

“I think he’s deserving of it,” Lupe said of Drake. “As many accolades as he can accumulate, pre-album, is a phenomenal task. I think that should be rewarded. He has the potential to do great things — not good or mediocre, but great things.”

I just wanted to post this up for those of you who respect Lupe but maybe don’t know about or aren’t ready for Drake. That’s right…that’s what i’ve been saying…not good or mediocre things for music and for hip hop…but GREAT things. watch out.
Also i like how highly Lupe talks about Mos.

mr hudson…anyone but him remix contest

Mr Hudson is having a remix contest for his next single Anyone But Him. The song is from his debut solo album Straight No Chaser on Kanye’s G.O.O.D. Music imprint. It’s an incredible album but is only (legally) available in the homeland (read UK) currently. It gets released here tomorrow according to wikipedia though I can’t find really any other information on it. Please find a way to get it and immerse yourself in heartache.

If you’ve got what it takes you could feature on Mr Hudson’s next single ‘Anyway But Him’, which is set to be released in the new year – Kanye West features on the album version but it could be YOU on the digital release.

Mr Hudson is looking for fresh UK MCs to record their original verses onto an instrumental of the track. Whoever lays down the sickest 16 bars will get the chance to hit the studio with Mr Hudson and will feature on the song which will be digitally released on March 15th.

ENTRANTS

1. Download the ‘Anyone But Him’ MP3 Instrumental for free by registering your email address in the box below.

2. Write & Record your original rap over the Instrumental.

3. Submit your finished track to Mr Hudson’s Dropbox (see Right)

The entries will be judged by Mr Hudson & the best verses will be posted on Mr Hudson’s website & online profiles. The winner will get to record the final track in a professional studio with Mr Hudson.

You can enter as many times as you like.

Good Luck!

Anyway, the remix contest says it is for UK emcees, but I feel like if a rapper from elsewhere in the world submits something and it’s super ill…why would they deny it?? The original track features a Kanye West verse (which is dope in its own right and I don’t understand why they’d change it?..but)
So in the light of hope for the extension of personal expression…find the instrumental here and record your best translation of self absorbed jealousy in 16 bars.

Peace and al green love…because.

InfeRed…No Turn On Red (2009 mixtape)

Gravity Jones presents InfeRed’s 2009 mixtape “No Turn On Red.” MLKjr said, “If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets, even as Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven played music, or Shakespeare wrote poetry.” Tony ‘InfeRed’ Graves feels his path is leading him to record and perform honest music. If it’s true that your soul should speak truest and loudest through your actions, midwest rapper InfeRed’s soul preaches through every line. In the vein of some of Hip-Hop’s most candid and ground breaking artists, Red works with a passion and dedication to his lyrics and each message they encompass. He is often likened to Jay-Z, Common, Royce Da 5’9, Elzhi, and, more recently, Wale. Download the mixtape, analyze the lyrics, scrutinize the songs, love it and hate it. Peace and much love.

Also, check it out, rate it, comment on it at datpiff.

Please spread it like wildfire!! Feel free to copy any of the links, artwork, music, burn it onto cds, whatever…just get it out there!! Electric grass roots style…
Also, please let us know what you think…
and while you’re at it check the official video for the single

mr hudson…time [making of]

this cat is an incredible song writer! this video is a pretty rad look into the studio with little personal one-off comments, recognizing his focus to get the music right, watching him vibe out… but really it’s a better preview of a track from his upcoming album (Straight No Chaser 10.19.09 in UK). please be on the lookout for this shit, i have a lot of confidence this will be a great great album.

“someday, are we gonna wake up? a little bit older…are we out of time, time, time?…tell me where you want to be, when all your friends have settled down in the suburbs on the greener side of town.”
peace, and make time with love.

emile interview…[the man behind] the man on the moon

Peace, sorry i’ve been slacking…this has been a very rough few weeks, particularly this past one.
Anyways, here is a really cool interview with Emile [who produced “In My Dreams (Cudder Anthem)”, “Soundtrack 2 My Life”, “Solo Dolo (Nightmare”), and “CuDi Zone” on KiD CuDi’s Man On The Moon album]. He actually goes through and you can listen to the track as he talks about making it.

Most of the time it was just CuDi and him in the studio, he started playing with some sounds until CuDi heard something he liked, then he started building chords and etc. with CuDi right there vibing with him.
I think this process is really rad, and extremely telling of the kind of music and entire album they made. That’s such an organic way of making music, which has become unorthodox in today’s internet-industry. I would love to see more artists work like this…I think we would hear even better music from some artists than we do now. This is how Kanye has done most of his albums (most notably 808’s and Jay-Z’s Blueprint 3).

On another note…I think i’m gonna try to start posting a “Song of the Week.” Partly 1. because I want to start keeping track of random mp3s that i dig on for a few days then forget about, and partly 2. because i want those of you who don’t really spread your musical listening horizons very far, i think you might be interested in some shit i rock. I sort of like to think I spread my horizons quite deep. So be on the lookout for that. So…

Take care ya’ll…I’ll be around.
Peace, and feel the love.

Michael Jackson tribute…the greatest

I couldn’t decide if it would be more cliche to not pay tribute on here, or to say something. I guess the one thing i can say is he is the greatest solo artist of this modern day. Whether you grew up on his music directly or not…you must understand, pop music is what is today and was yesterday because of Michael Jackson. Him as a performer, a singer, video producer, song writer, artist. He had the greatest individual impact on modern music and pop culture.
They asked, “Will their be another Beatles?” There was, it was Michael Jackson, and he was one man. Crazy.
Here’s the first and only (of a shit ton for sure) dedication i will likely post on here.
The Game, Diddy, Chris Brown, Boyz II Men – Better On the Other Side
My only problem is, Diddy makes everything cheesy and lame. But i guess it’s still cool. Everything else about it feels at least semi-genuine.
I was at work and we decided to put on some MJ (for nostalgic tribute i suppose)…Man In The Mirror was the first song to come on. I about cried. God damnit all.
Be on the lookout for new MJ music. I read that a few months ago he said he has over 100 songs recorded that will be released posthumously to support his kids. It feels sick…possibly too soon to say, but i’m looking forward it.
Peace, and greatest love to MJ.
